Edamame is a preparation of baby soybeans in the pod, commonly found in Japan, China, Hawaii and Korea. The pods are boiled in water or steamed, then served whole, usually with salt. Edamame is usually cooled before serving, but can also be served hot. Diners eat the soybeans and discard the pods. The United States Department of Agriculture refers to edamame as “a snack with a nutritional punch.” The baby soybeans are rich in protein and omega-3 fatty acids. They are also a good source of dietary fiber, iron and calcium.
